I am a lover of live music. I try to cut back for monetary reasons. But lately there has been a surge of great live music that just cannot be missed. Sometimes you go to a show and it’s a good time. Other times (hopefully rarely) you leave disappointed. There are those moments when you just connect with an artist and the experience is more than memorable. And then there are these moments. Moments where a live concert literally changes your life. An experience that changes the way you see things. This past Tuesday was one of those days.
My fiancee, a great friend of ours and I made a road trip to Vancouver to see Jonsi open up his first solo tour at the Vogue Theatre. Jonsi, for those that you don’t know, is the lead singer of Sigur Ros. Sigur Ros is a band from Iceland that has released in my opinion some of the most interesting music ever. I know, a very bold statement. But I stand by it.
Visually, there has been no show like this before. A mixture of visual media blended with a set that literally was a canvas for everything. To get a better idea of what I mean check out this video of the making of the tour
This was not a one trick pony either. The visuals were styled and suited to each song and were inspired by the natural elements that inspired each song. There were moments, when it was all about the music, and others where the visuals combined with the music just blew your mind. Sonically, this show was incredible. The songs on the album (released April 6th) are lushly arranged and heavy on the percussion and orchestration. This five piece band recreated the studio recordings impeccably and the arrangements were at times jaw-dropping. It went from piano and xylophone instrumentals to 8 minute plus epics ending in Thunderstorms of feedback. Jonsi’s nymph like voice never failed to awe with it’s amazing power and range and the brilliant percussion carried the music to the next level.
The album Go is an album that takes the epicness of Sigur Ros and pushes it surprisingly further. Go is an album of joy and energy that simply makes you feel good. I ordered the Limited edition version and can’t wait for it to arrive. If you get a chance to witness this show, anywhere you are, take it. It will change the way you look at music.
