Over the past couple months the Calgary Folk Music Festival team has been leaking one artist a week who will feature in the 2011 festival. We’ve learned that Joseph Arthur, The Felice Brothers, The Head and the Heart, Lightning Dust, Ernest Ranglin and K.D. Lang will be there but those artists were just a taste for the diverse, exciting bands that are playing this Summer in Prince’s Island Park.
Ok, so I wrote that in anticipation of today’s announcement and I’d have to say I’m a bit disappointed in the lineup. I was expecting some big surprises, but the big names all look like something I’d see at Edmonton’s Folk Fest. Not to say Edmonton’s Folk Fest is bad, but they seem to play it nice and safe, which is what Calgary looks like this year. Sure Blue Rodeo is good, but they play a fest every year. Buffy Sainte-Marie, not my thing at all. Joel Plaskett and Patrick Watson: artists I want to like, but just can’t seem to get in to. Sure there are a few that I want to see like Braids, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and The Herbaliser, and a bunch that I’ll discover at the festival, but on paper, this festival has nothing on the last two years.
This year’s festival happens in July from the 21st – 24th. Tickets are on sale as of today and are available as 4-day passes, 4-day flex-passes and single day tickets. The early bird price for a 4-day pass is $135 and will remain so until June 1.
